Painted Patterns of the Pacific: Tapa Cloth Inspired Art
Where: La Mesita Park, La Mesa, CA Capacity: 15 students
Join us under the Young Artists big art tent as we dive into the rich tradition of Hawaiian kapa (tapa) cloth—a hand-crafted textile made from mulberry tree bark, adorned with symbolic patterns that tell stories of family, nature, and spirit.
In this hands-on workshop, young artists will create their own tapa-inspired art pieces using watercolor, repetition, and earthy tones on textured paper that mimics the look and feel of traditional bark cloth.
Students will learn about the cultural significance of Hawaiian kapa, explore natural pattern-making and symbolic design, and express their own story or identity through stylized tapa-inspired artwork.

We'll take inspiration from the beauty of nature and the magic of stained glass! In this hands-on art workshop, young artists will create vibrant, light-catching artworks that mimic the look of real stained glass using a mix of transparent surfaces, bold outlines, and bright colors.
In this magical outdoor workshop, students will create nature-inspired “stained glass” artworks using paint pens and other easy-to-use materials on transparent surfaces. They’ll sketch designs featuring leaves, flowers, butterflies, and other natural wonders—then bring them to life with bold lines and vibrant color. Note: We will not be using real glass for obvious safety reasons.
